My Thoughts on Give Me a Cheat!
"Give Me a Cheat!" is an isekai novel that I found to be a mixed bag, but ultimately enjoyable enough to keep me reading. It certainly has some interesting ideas, even if the execution isn't always perfect.
First Impressions
Initially, the novel had a very relaxed, almost slice-of-life feel. The premise is that thousands of heroes are summoned annually to fight demons, but the demon war ended long ago. Our MC gets summoned with absolutely terrible stats, and spends a considerable amount of time just living a simple life as a low-level quail hunter. This opening was surprisingly engaging, offering a unique take on the typical overpowered isekai protagonist. I appreciated the slow burn and the focus on world-building.
What Works Well
The early chapters really shine with their lighthearted tone and world-building. The translation is solid, which always helps with immersion. I particularly enjoyed the initial premise and how the author explored a world where the "hero" trope has become commonplace and almost mundane. The MC's initial struggle and adaptation to his circumstances were also well-written.
Areas of Concern
Around chapter 100, the story seems to take a sharp turn, and I felt a shift in the narrative's direction. It's as if the author decided to shake things up, and while change isn't inherently bad, the transition felt a bit jarring. The MC's sudden power spike felt somewhat unearned and altered the established tone of the novel. While the new direction wasn't a complete deal-breaker for me, it did detract from some of the initial charm that drew me in. I believe the story could have benefited from a more gradual progression of power.
