My Thoughts on General Marries
"General Marries" promised a sweeping historical romance, and while it delivered on the historical front, the romance felt more like a whisper than a shout. I went in expecting a passionate love story amidst political turmoil, but what I found was a much more subtle, almost understated, connection between the leads.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the strong female lead. The early chapters focus heavily on her military life, her family, and the bonds she shares with her comrades. This was a refreshing change of pace and I appreciated the world-building that established her character and her environment. I found myself invested in her journey as a capable captain navigating a male-dominated world.
What Works Well
The strength of this novel lies in its portrayal of military strategies and political intrigue. The author clearly put a lot of thought into crafting the battles and courtly maneuvers. The descriptions were vivid, and I could easily visualize the scenes unfolding. The female protagonist's competence and resilience were also highlights for me. She's not just a damsel in distress; she's a capable leader who earns the respect of those around her, even if she faces prejudice.
Areas of Concern
My main issue, and I think others might agree, is the pacing of the romance. It's a slow burn, almost to the point of being nonexistent for a significant portion of the story. I was left wanting more development in the relationship between the general and the Emperor. Their interactions felt formal and distant, making it difficult to truly invest in their connection. I also found the ending a bit abrupt and unsatisfying. I would have liked to see more exploration of the MC's motivations for finally accepting the Emperor's advances.

Final Verdict
"General Marries" is a complex novel that excels in its historical and political elements. If you're looking for a fast-paced, passionate romance, this might not be the book for you. However, if you appreciate intricate plots, strong female characters, and a slow-burn romance that prioritizes political intrigue, then it might be worth a read. I'd give it a solid 3 out of 5 stars.
