"Failed To Abandon the Villain" is a web novel that definitely left me with a lot to think about. It's a dark fantasy romance that doesn't shy away from exploring the long-lasting impact of trauma, and while it's not perfect, it offers a unique and often disturbing reading experience.
First Impressions
Initially, I wasn't sure what to make of it. The premise is that the FL, Valletta, is a reincarator who ends up in the backstory of a villain named Reinhardt. Both characters have endured significant abuse, and their interactions are complex and often unsettling. I found myself questioning whether I could root for a relationship built on such a foundation.
What Works Well
What I appreciated most was the novel's unflinching portrayal of trauma. Neither Valletta nor Reinhardt magically overcome their pasts. Their scars run deep, shaping their actions and motivations. The ML is a true yandere, which some readers loved for its realism and others found disturbing. I think that the author did a good job not pulling any punches. The characters had to grow and learn from their mistakes, I really enjoyed seeing the characters development.
Areas of Concern
I can see why some readers struggled with the FL, Valletta. I noticed that some readers felt that she was inconsistent, and apathetic. I can understand this criticism, as her emotional distance can be off-putting. However, I also saw the author using the FL's flaws as a way to show that she is human and growing as a person.
