"Elder Sister Resentment Syndrome" is a web novel that definitely took me by surprise. It's a complex family drama with a touch of mature romance that kept me turning the page, even when I wasn't sure where it was going.
First Impressions
Initially, I was thrown off by the opening. I wasn't sure if I was stepping into something a bit too cliché, but I quickly realized there was much more depth beneath the surface. The story introduces us to Xie Qihua, a young woman essentially abandoned by her gold-digging mother and thrust into a family where she's more of an outsider than a daughter. Her relationship with her two stepbrothers is fraught with tension and bullying from the start, which sets the stage for a complicated dynamic later on.
What Works Well
The novel shines in its exploration of complex family relationships. The back-and-forth between past and present effectively reveals the characters' histories and motivations. I found the FL, Xie Qihua, to be a compelling character. She's flawed, independent, and fiercely protective of the two younger brothers she ends up raising. Her wit and bluntness were refreshing, and I appreciated that she wasn't portrayed as a typical naive protagonist. The author did a great job of portraying the mundanity of life and using it to highlight the emotional turmoil of the characters. I also appreciated the realism of the characters' struggles, which made them feel relatable.

One aspect that gave me pause was the eldest brother's obsession with Xie Qihua. While the story explores the roots of his feelings, his actions sometimes veer into disturbing territory.
