Caught in My Own Trap

Description
The furthest you can be with someone, is not when you are unable to be by their side, but when one harbors an unknown one-sided love. Even while you are by my side, I fail to realize that I love you. And, even though we are this close, one must go left, and the other right. — Many years ago, Zheng Xie vowed, “If I am to have any other thoughts about He He, than let me be struck by thunder!” He firmly believed that rationality is much stronger than emotions. Many years later, in ways that he had never expected, he was struck by thunders and earthquakes.

My Thoughts on Caught in My Own Trap
"Caught in My Own Trap" promised a slow-burn romance, a trope I usually adore. The premise of childhood friends, Zheng Xie and He He, stumbling their way toward love seemed charming enough. However, after diving in, I found myself experiencing a rollercoaster of emotions, mostly leaning towards frustration.
First Impressions
Initially, I was intrigued by the dynamic between the two leads. The idea of a "cold" male lead and a "cute" female protagonist had potential. I was ready to settle in for a heartwarming story of missed connections and eventual realization. Unfortunately, that feeling didn't last.
What Works Well
There are glimpses of a good story here. Some readers found the slow pacing endearing, appreciating the realistic portrayal of how two people can be oblivious to their feelings. I can see the appeal in the "right person, wrong time" trope, and the author attempts to capture that. The supporting characters, while sometimes contributing to the frustrating plot, are also noted to be well-written, with some readers feeling sympathy for them. The concept of a couple that just "fits" despite their quirks also resonated with some, highlighting that the author may have had a vision for the couple.
Areas of Concern
My biggest issue, echoed by many, is the character development, or lack thereof. Zheng Xie comes across as emotionally stunted and cold, making it difficult to root for him. He He, while intended to be cute, often veers into childish and immature, which I found grating. The lack of genuine connection between them is palpable. Several readers mentioned feeling no "sweetness of love" or emotional investment in their relationship. It felt like I was watching a dull babysitter tending to a spoiled child, not a couple destined for romance. The constant push and pull, the misunderstandings that drag on for far too long, ultimately made the story feel exhausting rather than endearing. The lack of depth in their emotions made it hard to believe that they even loved each other. The resolution of their issues felt rushed and superficial, leaving me with a sense of dissatisfaction.

Final Verdict
While "Caught in My Own Trap" has a promising premise, the execution falls short. The frustrating characters, lack of genuine connection, and slow pacing ultimately make it a difficult read. I wanted to love this novel, but I couldn't shake the feeling that I was trapped in a cycle of annoyance and disappointment. I would only recommend this to readers who enjoy extremely slow-burn romances and are willing to tolerate frustrating characters. For me, the journey wasn't worth the destination.
