Description
This novel should be called “Guts on Display,” born from a dream where the abdomen is split open by a scalpel. The intestines, meant to produce excrement, spill out brain matter instead. Amoebas writhe and dance, supernovas explode, giants paint on Jupiter’s surface, and aliens hungrily gnaw at genetic chains. Among garlic pork, rivers of vodka, and acid rain made of colourful pills, people march through urban towers wearing astronaut helmets. A steel-crafted dancer, unable to find its eyes, turns to its customer and says, “Amitabha.” And the Buddha replied, “Love me if you dare.” It’s hard to say what this piece is describing. It has the surrealism of a circus, and so that’s what I’ll call it: Circus Literature.

My Thoughts on Buddha Said
"Buddha Said" is a wild ride, a fever dream dipped in sci-fi and drizzled with dark humor. From what I've experienced so far, it's not a novel for the faint of heart, but it's definitely one that sticks with you.
First Impressions
Jumping into this story felt like being thrown into the deep end of a very strange pool. The premise alone – government archaeologists exploring quantum "ruins" – is enough to pique my interest. The early romance between Zhao Meiyou and Qian Duoduo is a bit abrupt, but I'm willing to see where it goes, especially given the hints that there's more to their story than meets the eye.
What Works Well
The writing is undeniably strong. The author weaves together sci-fi, dystopia, and even fantastical elements into something truly unique. The characters, even the side ones, are well-developed and have their own compelling storylines. I appreciate a story that isn't afraid to delve into complex themes and explore the darker aspects of humanity. The plot is intricate and rewards close attention, with no loose ends left untied. The emotional depth of the story is also a major strength, capable of evoking strong feelings even months after reading. I can see why this novel has garnered such a passionate following.
