Description

My Thoughts on Brother-in-law
"Brother-in-law" is a completed historical yaoi novel that I decided to dive into, knowing it was a bit of a shorter story. The complex family dynamics and promise of a romance set in ancient times definitely piqued my interest.
First Impressions
The premise itself is a bit of a rollercoaster. The story centers around the MC who develops feelings for his brother-in-law (the ML) after his sister's death. He's quite young when these feelings first emerge, and the age gap definitely adds another layer to the dynamic.
What Works Well
I found the character development of the MC to be a strong point. We witness his journey from a somewhat immature teenager to a more mature individual, all while his feelings for the ML remain steadfast. There's a certain admirable quality to his unwavering devotion, especially considering the challenges he faces. The author does a good job painting a picture of unrequited love and the slow burn that simmers beneath the surface. The writing style is also quite descriptive and evocative, which really helps to immerse you in the historical setting. I appreciated the level of detail and the care taken to build the world.
Areas of Concern
The ML's character is where I had some reservations. His behavior towards the MC can be interpreted as a little manipulative or at least confusing. He seems to send mixed signals, and it can be frustrating to watch the MC navigate this emotional minefield. While this dynamic might add to the realism, it also made it difficult for me to fully root for the relationship at times. I also felt the ending was a bit rushed.
