First Impressions
The premise alone is enough to grab your attention: a young woman, Gu Jianli, swaps her engagement to a promising young nobleman for his supposedly dying uncle, Ji Wujing. Right away, you know you're in for something different. The initial chapters set the stage well, establishing Gu Jianli's resourcefulness and the precariousness of her family's situation.
What Works Well
Gu Jianli is a compelling protagonist. She's intelligent, resilient, and possesses a sharp wit that makes her a joy to follow. Ji Wujing, the "dying" uncle, is equally intriguing. He's a complex character, a powerful official with a cruel reputation, and the author isn't afraid to make him a little twisted. I enjoyed the slow-burn romance between them. It's built on a foundation of distrust and power imbalances, but slowly evolves into something deeper, with moments of genuine vulnerability. The political intrigue adds another layer of depth, keeping the story engaging beyond the romance. I also appreciated the moments of levity, particularly the dynamic between Gu Jianli and her father, which provided some much-needed comic relief.

The ML is a little too much at times. While some may find his eccentricities endearing, others might find him off-putting. Also, a few of the antagonists veer into cartoonish territory, lacking the nuance that makes the main characters so compelling.
