"Born Lunatic" is a wild ride, and I can definitely see why it's garnered such a dedicated following. It's a blend of genres that shouldn't work, but somehow does, creating a compelling and often heart-wrenching story.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the mystery aspect and the promise of a cunning protagonist. The boss-subordinate dynamic also piqued my interest. I quickly found myself immersed in a world of crime, investigations, and complex relationships.
What Works Well
The strength of this novel lies in its characters, particularly Bai Zhou and Yu Du Qiu. Their relationship is a tangled mess of emotional manipulation, unrequited love (at least initially), and genuine affection. Bai Zhou's relentless pursuit of Yu Du Qiu, despite facing constant rejection and Yu's own emotional baggage, is both admirable and heartbreaking. Their interactions are fraught with tension, and the author does a fantastic job of portraying the raw emotions involved. I found myself rooting for them, even when their actions were questionable. The mystery elements are also well-executed, keeping me guessing and engaged throughout the story. The plot is intricate, with plenty of twists and turns to keep you on your toes.
Areas of Concern
While I thoroughly enjoyed the novel, I can see how some readers might find certain aspects challenging. The characters are flawed, and their relationship is far from healthy at times.
