Description
During Grand Elder Bai’s birthday banquet, the always mysterious Feng Long, the Alliance Leader of Wulin, came to personally offer his birthday wishes, making the old man brimming with smiles. When the distinguished guest graced everyone with his presence, the joyous atmosphere grew even stronger. Whilst the eyes of the crowd as well as their admiration and envy focused on the pride of Wulin, Feng Long’s eyes, instead fell upon the most inconspicuous corner of the birthday banquet. “I, Feng Long, am untalented. To think that there is such a handsome new talent in Wulin. May I ask this honorable friend for your name?” The people from the Bai family secretly frowned. The guests in the hall were also distinguished and outstanding talents, why was it that the stain of the Bai Family, the most unloved by his father, the third young master of the Bai Family, who was not even allowed to learn the Bai family’s style of martial arts, had attracted the attention of the Alliance Leader, Feng Long? This is the world-famous Bilu sword? After one meeting, Bai Shaoqing immediately came to a conclusion: this person was powerful, he should not stay any longer at the Bai Family Manor. Out of the thirty-six stratagems, fleeing was the best answer.

My Thoughts on Bat
"Bat" certainly flew me through a whirlwind of emotions! This wuxia danmei novel promises a true enemies-to-lovers experience, and it mostly delivers, albeit with some turbulence along the way. The world of ancient China is vividly painted, and the central conflict is immediately gripping. I found myself intrigued by the premise of morally grey characters navigating a dangerous landscape of martial arts and hidden identities.
First Impressions
Right off the bat (pun intended!), I was drawn in by the poetic language and the promise of complex characters. The initial setup is strong, with the MC presenting a facade of helplessness while harboring a hidden identity and a hidden agenda. The dynamic between him and the ML is charged with animosity, setting the stage for a potentially explosive relationship. However, the early chapters involving torture were definitely a shock to the system and made me question the ML's motivations.
What Works Well
When "Bat" soars, it really soars. I appreciated the author's commitment to the "enemies" part of the trope, something that's often lacking in similar stories. The tension is palpable, and the moments of genuine connection between the MC and ML are all the more impactful because of the animosity that precedes them. I also found myself invested in the overall plot, with its twists, turns, and political intrigue. The translation seems well-done, allowing the story to flow smoothly.
Areas of Concern
My biggest reservation lies in the consistency of the characters, particularly the ML. His initial portrayal as someone who inflicts torture seemingly without remorse clashes with his later depiction as a devoted lover. This shift felt jarring and, honestly, a little unearned. I also questioned the MC's decision-making at times, as he often seemed to act against his own best interests. Finally, the climax felt somewhat rushed and anticlimactic, which was a letdown after such a buildup.

Final Verdict
"Bat" is a flawed but ultimately engaging read. While the inconsistencies in character development and the somewhat rushed ending hold it back from reaching its full potential, the strong initial premise, the intense enemies-to-lovers dynamic, and the overall intrigue kept me hooked. If you're a fan of mature danmei with morally grey characters and aren't afraid of some potentially triggering content, "Bat" might be worth a look. I would give it a solid 3.5 out of 5 stars.
