My Thoughts on Bastian
"Bastian" is a rollercoaster of emotions that left me both captivated and disturbed. It's a story that delves into the complexities of love, betrayal, and redemption, but not without treading into some potentially triggering territory. While the payoff might be worth it for some, it's definitely not a novel for the faint of heart.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the premise of a contract marriage between a war hero and a fallen princess. The aristocratic setting and promise of drama had me intrigued. However, I quickly realized that this wasn't going to be a lighthearted read. The tags alone – abusive characters, child abuse, depictions of cruelty – hinted at the dark themes explored within.
What Works Well
Despite the heavy subject matter, "Bastian" shines in its character development, particularly with Bastian himself. While initially unlikeable, his journey toward self-awareness and redemption is compelling. The author does a great job of portraying his internal struggles and the reasons behind his cruelty. The female lead, Odette, is also a strong character who displays both dignity and vulnerability in the face of adversity. Her ability to endure and eventually heal is admirable. The ending, while hard-earned, provides a sense of closure and allows the characters to find peace and happiness.
Areas of Concern
The most significant issue I had with "Bastian" is its portrayal of an abusive relationship. The male lead's actions, including instances of sexual assault, are deeply disturbing and may be triggering for some readers. While the story attempts to redeem him later on, it's difficult to fully forgive his past behavior. Additionally, the female lead's initial passivity and acceptance of mistreatment can be frustrating. It's important to approach this novel with caution and be aware of its potentially harmful themes.

Final Verdict
"Bastian" is a complex and challenging novel that explores the darkest corners of human relationships. While it offers moments of redemption and ultimately a happy ending, it's not a story for everyone. If you're willing to confront difficult themes and can separate fiction from reality, you might find "Bastian" to be a worthwhile, albeit disturbing, read. However, if you're sensitive to depictions of abuse, it's best to steer clear. I'd rate it a cautious 3 out of 5 stars.
