Description
Twelve years is just enough time for a living organism to turn into a frozen fish. Sun Ye Jin, a veteran idol of 12 years who long ago lost his initial passion and could only manage a dead-eyed “Oh, really?” as a default response. He suddenly finds himself back at age 19. This was the time when, while planning to betray his group, his agency, and go solo, he got caught up in a sasaeng fan’s antics and was recruited as a trainee. At this point, Sun Ye Jin’s bank account balance is exactly 1,072 won! If he wants to make money, he must become an idol again. If he doesn’t leave the group or go solo, won’t he avoid the life-threatening events from before? With this resolve, he decides to debut with Reverb once more and show everyone something incredible! …Or so he thought, but something about his former group member, Cheon Tae Rim seems off. “You’re not going to become an idol.” “What?” “You won’t debut.”

Spit Out the Fish Eyes, Swallow the Debut Review & Spoilers - Novel Translator
My Thoughts on Spit Out the Fish Eyes, Swallow the Debut
"Spit Out the Fish Eyes, Swallow the Debut" is quite the ride, and while it has its flaws, I found myself thoroughly entertained by this idol-centric story. The blend of age regression, showbiz drama, and slow-burn romance definitely kept me hooked, even if the ending left me wanting a bit more.
First Impressions
The premise is immediately intriguing: a second chance at idol life with the knowledge of past mistakes. The humor is definitely a strong point, especially the dynamic between the MC and ML. The MC's internal monologue and assumptions about the ML knowing about the regression added a layer of comedy that I really enjoyed. It's a fun, lighthearted start that promises a journey of self-improvement and idol success.
What Works Well
The focus on the showbiz aspect is a major plus. I appreciated that the romance wasn't the sole driving force of the plot. Seeing the MC navigate the challenges of the idol world, leveraging his future knowledge to make better choices, was genuinely engaging. The development of the relationships, both within the main couple and amongst the idol group, felt authentic and added depth to the story. I particularly liked how the MC used his second chance to change things for the better, addressing past hurts and building stronger bonds with those around him. His character development is a strong point, even with his humorous self-deprecating thoughts.
Areas of Concern
The ending felt a bit rushed and anticlimactic. The central conflict didn't quite deliver the punch I was expecting, and the buildup with the side characters, while enjoyable, didn't seem to lead to a truly impactful payoff. The pacing in the beginning and middle could also feel a bit dragged out at times, and I found myself wishing for more "lovey dovey" moments between the main couple. While the focus on their careers is appreciated, a bit more balance would have been nice. Also, while the MC's internal thoughts are part of his character, they can occasionally become exhausting to read.
Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, "Spit Out the Fish Eyes, Swallow the Debut" is an enjoyable read for fans of idol stories with a touch of regression and a slow-burn romance. While the ending could have been stronger, the journey of self-improvement, the humor, and the well-developed relationships make it worth checking out. I'd recommend it, but with the caveat that the ending might leave you wanting more.
