My Thoughts on After Saving the Villainous Dragon
"After Saving the Villainous Dragon" promised a captivating blend of xianxia, romance, and a dash of shounen ai, and for the most part, it delivered. I was intrigued by the premise of a righteous cultivator saving a demon lord, and I dove in eager to see how the story unfolded.
First Impressions
Initially, I was hooked. The world-building felt rich, and the dynamic between the protagonist and the dragon demon lord had a certain charm. The writing style, at least in the early chapters, was particularly appealing, drawing me into the ancient Chinese setting. The initial appearance of the ML was awe inspiring and I enjoyed it.
What Works Well
The main character, a calm and decisive cultivator, is definitely a strong point. I found myself appreciating his maturity and unwavering resolve, especially when the dragon demon lord was in danger. The romance is a major draw, and while some might find the dynamic a bit unconventional, I appreciated the story's exploration of a devoted love interest in a powerful, albeit sometimes childish, being.
Areas of Concern
However, as the story progressed, I started to feel a slight shift in the narrative's quality. The initial charm began to wane, and the dragon demon lord's characterization felt somewhat inconsistent. While his cute, coquettish actions as a little dragon were endearing at first, they did become a bit repetitive and, dare I say, a tad tiresome. I can see why some readers might find him a bit too much like a "teddy bear princess" rather than the awe-inspiring demon lord I was initially introduced to. Also, the theme of the main character's system and cards isn't fully fleshed out, which is a shame.
Final Verdict
Overall, "After Saving the Villainous Dragon" is a decent read that I would recommend. It has its flaws, particularly in the later characterization of the dragon demon lord, but the strong protagonist, engaging world, and unique romance make it worth exploring. While I wouldn't necessarily rush to reread it, it's a solid choice for those looking for a xianxia novel with a fluffy, albeit sometimes frustrating, love story.
