My Thoughts on A Pragmatist’s Love
"A Pragmatist's Love" sounded right up my alley – historical, romantic, and a little bit different. And after diving in, I can definitely see why it's garnering so much attention. The setting alone, 1970s China, is a breath of fresh air in a genre often dominated by more familiar historical periods.
First Impressions
The initial chapters really hooked me. The author's writing style is captivating, and I immediately appreciated how the story highlights the everyday lives of ordinary people navigating a complex political landscape. The female lead's pragmatism is evident from the start. Her relentless pursuit of education and a better future is admirable, even if her methods can be, well, pragmatic.
What Works Well
The novel's strength lies in its unique premise and detailed portrayal of life in 1970s China. It's a deep dive into a specific time and place, and I found myself completely immersed in the characters' daily struggles and triumphs. The male lead is generally well-received, often described as a "green flag" character who works hard to earn the FL's respect and improve their relationship. I also found the interactions between the leads to be interesting, largely due to their contrasting personalities.
Areas of Concern
I did find the female lead's character development to be a little inconsistent. While I initially admired her determination, I can see why some readers felt she became excessively focused on practicality and, at times, seemed to undervalue the male lead's contributions. This pragmatism, while understandable given the setting, can make the romance feel a bit transactional at times, lacking those swoon-worthy moments some readers might crave.
