Description

First Impressions
From the start, I was captivated by the main character's strength and resilience. The premise itself is intriguing: a young woman sells herself into servitude and encounters a kind family. This immediately sets the stage for a story of perseverance and found family, which are themes I always appreciate.
What Works Well
What truly shines is the protagonist, Wen Su. She's a hardworking, intelligent, and selfless character who is dedicated to those she cares about. Her journey from servitude to independence is inspiring, and it's easy to root for her success. The author does a fantastic job of developing her character in such a short space, making her feel like a fully realized person.
The found family aspect is another highlight. The relationship between Wen Su and the Wen family, particularly the young Baoyin, is heartwarming and adds depth to the story. The romance, while present, takes a backseat to the familial bonds and Wen Su's personal growth, which I found refreshing. I also appreciated the historical setting and the glimpse into ancient Chinese society.
Areas of Concern
While I thoroughly enjoyed the story, there were a couple of minor points that gave me pause. I can see how the female lead's decision to leave for two years near the end of the story could be seen as frustrating or unnecessary, as it does prolong the romantic resolution. However, this didn't detract too much from my overall enjoyment, but I can understand why some might find it a bit contrived.
