"Young Master Gu, Please Be Gentle" certainly proved to be... an experience. Going in, I was expecting a fairly standard modern romance with some face-slapping moments. What I got was a wild ride through a world populated by deeply flawed, sometimes downright awful, characters.
First Impressions
Initially, I was intrigued. The premise held promise, and the early chapters hinted at a strong female lead. However, my enthusiasm waned as the story progressed. I quickly realized this wasn't your typical sweet romance.
What Works Well
Despite the criticisms, I can see why some readers are drawn to this novel. The sheer drama is undeniably addictive. The complex relationships between the characters, however twisted, kept me somewhat invested. The author doesn't shy away from exploring uncomfortable themes, and while the execution is debatable, the attempt at depth is noticeable.
Areas of Concern
Unfortunately, the issues outweigh the positives for me. The female lead's character development, or lack thereof, is a major sticking point. Instead of remaining the strong, independent woman she was initially portrayed as, she seems to devolve into a damsel in distress, constantly needing rescue. The male lead's actions are often problematic, to say the least, and the romanticization of non-consensual acts is deeply disturbing. I found myself increasingly frustrated with the characters' inability to communicate and their tendency to repeat the same mistakes. The constant misunderstandings felt contrived and served only to prolong the already convoluted plot. Also, the sheer number of characters and their interwoven relationships can be overwhelming, requiring a dedicated effort to keep track of everyone.

"Young Master Gu, Please Be Gentle" is a deeply flawed novel with problematic themes. While the drama can be addictive, the weak female lead, abusive male lead, and romanticization of non-consensual acts make it difficult to recommend. Proceed with caution, and be aware of the potentially triggering content. I can't say I enjoyed my time with it, and I won't be continuing the series.
