My Thoughts on Yan Yan
"Yan Yan" is a novel that took me on a rollercoaster of emotions, and while it wasn't a perfect ride, I ultimately found it a worthwhile experience. The story delves into romance and slice of life with a heavy dose of yandere elements, making it a unique, if sometimes unsettling, read.
First Impressions
Initially, I was intrigued by the premise of a caring female protagonist entangled with a cold, possessive love interest. The early chapters certainly set the stage for a potentially dramatic and emotionally charged story. However, I can understand why some readers might find the beginning slow or even boring, as one reviewer pointed out. It takes a little while for the plot to truly pick up steam.
What Works Well
What truly saved this novel for me, and what seems to be a common sentiment among readers, is the male lead's character development. He starts off as a textbook yandere, manipulative and obsessive, which can be off-putting. However, the author does a commendable job of redeeming him. The male lead eventually acknowledges his flaws and actively works to become a better person. This growth is crucial and makes the latter part of the story much more enjoyable and "fluffy," as one reader described it. I also appreciated the exploration of the male lead's background and how his upbringing contributed to his obsessive tendencies. It added a layer of depth and complexity to his character.
Areas of Concern
The initial portrayal of the male lead as overly possessive and manipulative might be a turn-off for some readers. I can see why some might find it difficult to root for a character who displays such controlling behavior.
