"Within The Sound of Swallows" promised a captivating blend of fantasy, historical intrigue, and romance set in ancient China. With tags like "clever protagonist" and "imperial harem," I dove in expecting a complex and engaging story. While the novel had moments that hooked me, I walked away with mixed feelings.
First Impressions
The initial chapters definitely grabbed my attention. There's an immediate sense of political tension and familial drama brewing, and I was eager to see how the female lead would navigate such treacherous waters. The world-building is decent, painting a vivid picture of the imperial court and the intricate power dynamics at play.
What Works Well
The plot is definitely intriguing. The author weaves together family noble conflicts and state politics into a story with a good flow and plenty of twists. I also appreciated the female lead's journey, even if she wasn't always the sharpest tool in the shed. The translator has also done a great job of conveying the author’s intent.
Areas of Concern
My biggest issue lies with the character development, particularly concerning the leads. I found the male lead’s actions questionable, especially his disregard for the female lead's personal space and consent. I struggled to connect with him, and his "playboy" act often felt unnecessary and off-putting. The villains also lack depth and feel cartoonish at times. Their plans aren't particularly clever, and their motivations seem shallow, which makes it hard to take the conflicts seriously.
