"Unfortunately, Not a Grown Up" promised a fun blend of comedy, romance, and school life, and for the most part, it delivered a pretty enjoyable experience. It's definitely a novel that knows its audience, and while it has some quirks, it's easy to see why it's captured some readers' hearts.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the premise of a coming-of-age story set against the backdrop of university life and online gaming. The synopsis hinted at a protagonist with hidden depths, and I was eager to dive into her journey of self-discovery. The early chapters definitely hooked me with their lighthearted tone and promise of romance.
What Works Well
The humor is definitely a strong point. There were moments where I genuinely laughed out loud, and the comedic timing felt natural. The female lead, despite her flaws, is relatable in her struggles with insecurity and trying to navigate the complexities of adulthood. The gaming element, while present, doesn't overwhelm the main plot, which I appreciated. It adds a nice layer to the characters and their interactions without becoming the sole focus. I found myself invested in the central romance.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the story overall, there were a few elements that felt a bit rushed or underdeveloped. The pacing could be uneven at times. The age gap between the main characters, while not inherently problematic, is treated as a bigger issue than it actually seems to be, which I found a little odd.
