First Impressions
The premise is definitely intriguing: a former eunuch from ancient China gets a second chance at love in the 1970s with the woman he adored in his past life. I was drawn in by the promise of a devoted male lead with a unique backstory and the potential for a sweet, second-chance romance. The "rags to riches" element also piqued my interest, suggesting a story of overcoming adversity.
What Works Well
I really appreciated the refreshing take on the reborn male lead. It's not often you see a male character with such a specific past life circumstance, and I think the author did a decent job of portraying his masculinity despite his former role. The devotion of the male lead is a strong point. The story shines when it focuses on the blossoming romance and the male lead's unwavering support for the female lead, which guides her toward a better life. The pacing, given the short length, is adequate, managing to weave in a few antagonists, a love story spanning two lifetimes, and a glimpse into their married life.
Areas of Concern
The female lead's characterization left something to be desired. Her tendency to remain passive and rely on the male lead to solve all her problems didn't resonate with me. The plot felt somewhat rushed and underdeveloped. The antagonists could have been more fleshed out, adding depth and tension to the narrative. The story sometimes lacked the necessary momentum to keep me fully engaged.
