This novel, "The Whole Family Are Villains, I’m the Group Pet," was quite the experience! It's a blend of genres I wouldn't normally expect to see together – comedy, horror, shounen ai, and supernatural elements all swirling around a cute child protagonist. It definitely kept me on my toes.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the "group pet" aspect. Who doesn't love a story where a character is utterly adored? The premise of a child surrounded by a villainous family intrigued me, and I dove in hoping for a heartwarming yet slightly twisted tale. I wasn't disappointed!
What Works Well
The family dynamic is definitely the highlight. The interactions between the MC and his doting, if morally questionable, family are genuinely heartwarming and often hilarious. The author does a fantastic job of balancing the darker elements of the horror setting with the lightheartedness of the MC's daily life. Also, I was impressed by the plot twists and how well-planned out the story was, with each element seamlessly fitting into the story.
I also appreciated the slow-burn nature of the romance. The shounen ai tag primarily revolves around the MC's father and another male character, adding another layer of depth to the family dynamic. The MC's innocence and child-like wonder made the instances in the horror world feel like a fantastical dream, which was a refreshing take on the genre.
Areas of Concern
The ending left me conflicted. The author's choice to reverse time felt a little unnecessary, as it seemed to diminish the impact of the events that transpired. It introduced some timeline inconsistencies that were hard to ignore. However, this didn't overshadow the overall enjoyment of the story.
