This novel certainly presents a mixed bag of elements, leaving me with conflicted feelings overall. While there are aspects I found charming and entertaining, some recurring issues made it difficult to fully embrace the story.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the premise of a doting older brother and a male lead vying for the female lead's attention. The idea of a "villain's little sister" being spoiled sounded like a fun, lighthearted read. However, as I delved deeper, I realized the story’s complexity extended beyond simple romance and familial affection.
What Works Well
I appreciated the dynamic between the female lead (FL) and her brother. The overprotective, yet loving, relationship was a highlight for me, even if some of the brother's actions were a bit extreme. I also found the FL’s character to be refreshing in some ways. She wasn't blindly in love with the male lead (ML) and maintained her independence, which is always a plus in my book. The ML's persistent pursuit of the FL was also endearing, and I liked that he fell in love first. The family dynamics, despite some flaws, were generally heartwarming, with parents who loved their children.
Areas of Concern
Unfortunately, there were several aspects that detracted from my enjoyment. A recurring criticism I noticed was the author's apparent bias against foreigners. I found the constant negative portrayals unsettling and unnecessary. Another issue was the occasional Chinese superiority complex that crept into the narrative, which felt out of place and tone-deaf. The descriptions of violence and action sequences sometimes felt exaggerated and more suited to a mafia story than a romance. And while the sibling relationship was cute, the father's physical punishment of the brother felt very uncomfortable and poorly handled. I agree with others that this aspect could have been addressed more thoughtfully.
