Description
In the remote Oak Town, a broken corpse lay in the bushes. The person who reported this crime was the dream man of the town’s ladies—Mr. Arthur. His graceful and expensive-looking gray coat was dyed with striking stains of blood. The day after the mu*der, Sheriff Lynn’s records, along with the corpse, disappeared without a trace, only leaving behind the man’s memories which were filled with the smell of blood… A year later, the details of the crime sank into the dense fog as time passed, but the daughters of the two single fathers grew closer and closer with each passing day. Although Arthur seemed impeccably perfect, his overly forceful actions to conceal something and his great loathing of anyone digging into his secrets made Lynn feel that the other person hated him like he was a reptile. What Lynn didn’t know was that he and Arthur were unexpectedly very similar—both of them were runaway desperadoes who had given up everything to protect their loved ones.

My Thoughts on The Retirement Life of a Runaway Desperado
"The Retirement Life of a Runaway Desperado" promised a unique blend of action, romance, and supernatural elements, and after diving in, I found it to be a generally enjoyable, albeit somewhat flawed, read. The premise alone – a former desperado seeking a peaceful retirement – is intriguing, and the addition of childcare and a potential romance adds layers to the story.
First Impressions
My initial impression was positive. The story immediately throws you into the lives of Lyn, the police officer with a past, and Arthur, the enigmatic doctor. The setting, a seemingly idyllic small town, quickly reveals its secrets, hinting at a darker undercurrent. I was hooked by the mystery and eager to see how these characters would navigate their complicated lives.
What Works Well
I appreciated the well-written prose and the mature tone of the novel. The plot is interesting, and the characters are generally well-developed, particularly Lyn. The "enemies-to-lovers" trope is present, and I found the interactions between Lyn and Arthur compelling. The inclusion of cute children adds a heartwarming element to the often-dark narrative. The story has a way of drawing you in and keeping you invested in the outcome. There are some truly engaging moments and the idea of a calm, clever, and caring protagonist is one that I found immediately appealing.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the story, I found that it felt somewhat rushed. The short length of the novel prevents a deeper exploration of the dark fantasy elements and leaves some unanswered questions about the characters' pasts. While Lyn and Arthur work well as partners, their romantic development felt somewhat lacking, and the chemistry between them could have been stronger. The shift to a romantic relationship felt abrupt, occurring mostly in the final chapter.

Final Verdict
Overall, "The Retirement Life of a Runaway Desperado" is a worthwhile read, especially if you enjoy mature stories with a blend of mystery, romance, and supernatural elements. While the short length and somewhat underdeveloped romance are drawbacks, the engaging plot and well-written prose make it an enjoyable experience. I would recommend it, but with the caveat that it might leave you wanting more.
