The premise is intriguing. A family seeking a scholar for a son-in-law, a woman with her own desires, and a man who initially wants nothing to do with it all. It sets the stage for a compelling dynamic, and I was curious to see how the story would unfold, especially with the promise of tragedy and revenge.
What Works Well
One of the strongest aspects of this novel is the relationship between Jian Ming Shu and Lu Cheng. The childhood friends to lovers trope is a classic for a reason, and "The Noble Son-in-Law" puts a unique spin on it. Lu Cheng's initial resistance to being "caught" by the Jian family, only to later become her protector and even pretend to be her brother, adds a layer of complexity that I appreciated. The fact that the female lead falls in love first is also a nice twist on the usual power dynamics in these kinds of stories. I also enjoyed the lack of excessive female rivalry, which allowed the focus to remain on the central romance and the overarching plot.
