Gu Lingzhi's journey from a mistreated young woman to a powerful cultivator promised a satisfying revenge story. The early focus on facing her stepmother and stepsister, who wronged her in her past life, provided a strong narrative hook. But, like many, I felt the story shifted gears abruptly, moving away from revenge and more into a slice-of-life cultivation narrative.

What Works Well

Despite some concerns, "The Attack of the Wastrel" has its strengths. I found Gu Lingzhi to be a compelling character, especially her determination to overcome adversity and develop her unique abilities. The supporting cast, particularly her friends Tianfeng Jin, Ye Fei, and Qin Xinran, added depth and personality to the story. Their interactions and individual quirks provided a welcome contrast to the often-serious main plot. I especially enjoyed Qin Xinran's character.

While I enjoy a strong protagonist, her rapid advancement and convenient acquisition of skills sometimes undermined the sense of struggle and growth. The plot also felt inconsistent, with villains changing and the initial revenge plot being sidelined.

"The Attack of the Wastrel" has potential, but it ultimately falls short due to problematic romantic elements, an overpowered protagonist, and inconsistent plot development. While the strong female friendships and intriguing world-building offer some appeal, the issues with the male lead and pacing ultimately detract from the overall experience.
