Description
One day the glaciers melted and the sleeping zombie virus invaded the world, mutating ABO’s to varying degrees. And Omegas, who have always been weak, became one of the most intractable corpses during those last days of the apocalypse. In order to obtain first-hand technical information from the outside world, the beta Cheng Jian, who just graduated from the Academia Sinica, was dispatched to the special operations team and became a technical soldier. Not only does she have to face the more arrogant Alpha teammates while the apocalypse rages around them every day, but even more terrible than that, she has to endure the iceberg-like Squad Captain. After graduating from military academy, all Cheng Jian wanted was to be a secretary for a young Ph. D doctor in a split officer’s dress! So why did you send me to kill zombies, then?! All I actually got was a zombie and an even more terrifying boss! Xu Wei glanced at her coldly, “Stare at me like that again and I’ll throw you off the helicopter.” Cheng Jian quickly glanced down where countless zombies crowded in the abandoned city, stretching their arms crazily upwards. She withered and defectively thought that her mother shouldn’t have given birth to her.

My Thoughts on The Apocalypse
"The Apocalypse" is a web novel that certainly left me with a lot to unpack. Blending action, psychological elements, romance, sci-fi, and yes, even smut, it's a wild ride through a post-apocalyptic omegaverse. It's definitely a novel that tries to do a lot, and I came away with mixed feelings about its execution.
First Impressions
Initially, I was intrigued by the premise. An apocalypse combined with the ABO genre? It sounded like it had the potential for some dark and gritty storytelling. However, I quickly realized that this story isn't for the faint of heart. It dives headfirst into some potentially triggering territory, which I'll address later.
What Works Well
Despite my reservations, I found myself drawn to the complexities of the main characters. The author does a good job of portraying them as flawed individuals, which adds a layer of depth that many similar novels lack. The male lead, while initially appearing as a cold and militant figure, has hidden depths and a surprising awkwardness. The female lead, presented as a timid beta, harbors obsessive tendencies and a genius intellect that borders on madness. This contrast between outward appearances and inner turmoil is what kept me invested. I also appreciated the unreliable narrator aspect. The story is told from the female lead's perspective, and her biases and self-deceptions color the reader's perception of events. This narrative technique creates a sense of paranoia and uncertainty, which enhances the overall atmosphere of the novel.
Areas of Concern
My biggest issue with "The Apocalypse" is the presence of s*xual assault. There are scenes that some readers may find disturbing, and I personally felt that they detracted from the overall narrative. The power dynamics in the ABO world are already fraught with potential for exploitation, and the inclusion of these scenes felt unnecessary and gratuitous. Additionally, I found the initial characterization of the female lead to be somewhat inconsistent. She starts as a seemingly plain beta but is later described as exceptionally beautiful, which felt like a bit of a contradiction.

Final Verdict
"The Apocalypse" is a complex and challenging novel that explores the darker aspects of human nature in a post-apocalyptic setting. While I appreciated the flawed characters and the unreliable narrator, the inclusion of s*xual assault was a significant drawback for me. If you're a fan of dark romance and psychological thrillers and are willing to navigate some potentially triggering content, then this novel might be worth a read. However, I would advise going in with caution and being prepared for a bumpy ride. Overall, I'd give it a 3 out of 5 stars.
