My Thoughts on Teihen Ryoushu
First Impressions
"Teihen Ryoushu" grabbed my attention as a lighthearted comedy with a dense protagonist at its core. The premise seemed simple enough: a seemingly incompetent MC somehow stumbles into success, leading to hilarious misunderstandings and a devoted following. I went in expecting a fun, quick read, and for a while, it definitely delivered on that promise.
What Works Well
The initial chapters are genuinely funny. The humor derives from the MC's obliviousness and the ridiculous situations he finds himself in. The pacing is fast, and the short chapters make it easy to consume. The novel doesn't take itself too seriously, which is a major strength. It embraces its absurdity and focuses on delivering comedic moments. I found myself chuckling at the sheer ridiculousness of it all. I also appreciated how the MC, despite his lack of awareness, manages to grow as a person throughout the story.
Areas of Concern
However, my enjoyment waned as the story progressed. Several readers mentioned a significant shift in tone and plot later on, and I have to agree. What started as a lighthearted comedy veered into bizarre territory, with increasingly outlandish events and character developments. This shift felt jarring and detracted from the initial charm of the novel. The kingdom-building aspects, which initially piqued my interest, turned out to be quite shallow. Also, the reliance on misunderstandings as the sole driver of the plot started to feel repetitive and forced.
