"Stigma" is a whirlwind of emotions, a dark and brooding tale set in ancient times that left me feeling conflicted, yet strangely captivated. It's a story of betrayal, revenge, and the heavy price of both. I went in expecting a tragic romance, and while I got that, I also got a lot more to unpack.

First Impressions

The initial chapters definitely threw me for a loop. The plot dives headfirst into Yoo EunSeo's fall from grace after a successful coup, landing her in a brothel and fueling her desire for vengeance against her former fiancé, Heo SeoYoon. It's a harsh setup, and it immediately establishes the dark tone that permeates the entire novel. I was immediately intrigued by the premise and the promise of a complex relationship between the two leads.

What Works Well

The author excels at crafting an atmosphere thick with despair and regret. The emotional punches hit hard, and I found myself genuinely invested in the characters' journeys, even when I didn't agree with their choices. EunSeo's transformation from a cheerful noblewoman to a woman hardened by suffering is compelling, and SeoYoon's internal struggles with guilt and his own thirst for revenge add layers to his character. The novel also raises interesting questions about the cycle of revenge and whether true happiness can be found in its pursuit. The pacing, despite the heavy themes, kept me engaged, and I appreciated the relatively short length, which prevented the story from dragging.

Areas of Concern

The male lead divided me, I found myself struggling with his actions, particularly a specific act that I found difficult to reconcile. While the author attempts to explore his motivations, I felt the redemption arc was rushed and didn't fully address the gravity of his choices. Some found it difficult to accept the seemingly easy reconciliation between EunSeo and SeoYoon, feeling it undermined the suffering both characters endured. Also, some plot points felt underdeveloped, such as the fate of a key supporting character.

"Stigma" is a flawed but ultimately thought-provoking novel. The dark themes, complex characters, and exploration of revenge make it a compelling read, but the handling of certain plot points and the rushed redemption arc may leave some readers wanting more.
