My Thoughts on Special Assistant
"Special Assistant" promised a blend of fantasy, romance, and a healthy dose of adult content, and for the most part, it delivered. I went in expecting a fluffy read with some spice, and that's largely what I got. While some elements gave me pause, overall, it was an enjoyable, albeit imperfect, experience.
First Impressions
Initially, the premise intrigued me. The boss-subordinate dynamic, coupled with the fantasy elements, had the potential for a compelling story. I was particularly drawn to the "awkward protagonist" tag, as I often find those characters relatable. The early chapters set the stage for a potentially angsty, dog-blooded plot, but the story quickly veered towards a more lighthearted direction.
What Works Well
I appreciated the neatness of the translation, which is always a huge plus in web novels. It allowed me to fully immerse myself in the story without being distracted by grammatical errors or awkward phrasing. I also enjoyed the balance between plot and steamy scenes. While the smut was definitely present, it didn't overshadow the narrative entirely. The supportive parents were a nice touch, offering a refreshing contrast to the often-toxic family dynamics found in similar stories. Furthermore, the story's straightforwardness was a strength. It didn't try to be something it wasn't, and I appreciated that.
Areas of Concern
However, I did have some reservations. Song Yan's whirlwind romance felt a bit rushed and, at times, overbearing. I wished the story had explored Bai Yucheng's internal struggles with adapting to such an intense relationship more deeply. The potential for conflict was definitely there, especially given Song Yan's short-tempered nature, but it felt somewhat glossed over.

Final Verdict
Despite my concerns, "Special Assistant" is ultimately a sweet and steamy AO romance. If you're looking for a lighthearted read with a caring protagonist and a clingy lover, this might be right up your alley. Just be aware of the potentially problematic elements before diving in. I'd give it a solid 3 out of 5 stars.
