My Thoughts on Small Crescent
"Small Crescent" promised a sweet romance with a dash of angst, and for the most part, it delivered. I dove in expecting a rollercoaster of emotions, and while it wasn't quite as intense as I anticipated, I still found myself charmed by the central relationship.
First Impressions
The initial setup, focusing on the protagonists' high school days, was a mixed bag for me. The male lead, Chen Yang, came on strong. While his devotion to Le Ya, the female lead, was clear, some of his earlier actions felt a bit too forceful. It treads a fine line, and I can see how some readers might find his initial pursuit overwhelming. However, once they actually navigate their feelings and solidify their relationship, the story really hits its stride.
What Works Well
The chemistry between Le Ya and Chen Yang is undeniable. They're a cute couple, and their interactions are often heartwarming. I especially appreciated the author's decision to portray Chen Yang as someone who, despite any internal "dark thoughts," always respects Le Ya's boundaries. This was a pleasant surprise and made him a much more likable character in my eyes. I also enjoyed the inclusion of the side couples and their stories, which added depth to the overall narrative. The novel has a warm, light-hearted tone that makes it an easy and enjoyable read.
Areas of Concern
The dreaded separation arc did make me roll my eyes a bit. The four-year time skip felt glossed over, and I would have loved to see more of the challenges they faced as a couple in a long-distance relationship. It felt like a missed opportunity to add some real depth and complexity to their dynamic. The ending also felt a tad rushed. Certain plot points and revelations felt anti-climactic, leaving me wanting a bit more resolution.

Final Verdict
Overall, "Small Crescent" is a worthwhile read if you're looking for a sweet and relatively low-angst romance. While it has its flaws, the strong chemistry between the leads and the generally heartwarming tone make it an enjoyable experience. I'd give it a solid 3.75/5 stars. I just wish the author had taken a bit more time to flesh out certain aspects of the plot and character development.
