From their first meeting as college first-years, to their cohabiting daily life in their 20s. In 2006, their relationship ended, and Nan Kang wrote “Waiting Until 35 Years Old.”

My Thoughts on Six Records of a Floating Life

This web novel… it's something else. It's left me with a bittersweet feeling, a longing, and a profound sense of sadness. It’s deceptively simple, a slice-of-life story that slowly, subtly, creeps under your skin and settles deep in your heart.

First Impressions

Initially, I went in expecting a sweet, if perhaps slightly melancholic, yaoi romance. What I found was something far more raw, more real. The writing style is straightforward, almost blog-like in its simplicity, detailing the everyday life of the author and his "husband." It's a collection of seemingly mundane moments that paint a vivid picture of their relationship. If you go in blind, you might think it's just a simple love story. But it's so much more than that.

What Works Well

The beauty of Six Records lies in its authenticity. The author, Nan Kang, doesn't shy away from the ordinary. He captures the warmth and comfort found in the everyday, the small joys that make up a relationship. The characters feel incredibly real, flawed and relatable. It's easy to see yourself in their story, to understand their love, their struggles.

What elevates this novel even further is its companion piece, Waiting Until 35 Years Old. Reading them together creates an entirely new layer of emotional depth. Six Records becomes not just a love story, but a chronicle of heartbreak, loss, and the enduring power of love even in the face of immense pain. It is a true story, and that's what makes it so powerful.

Areas of Concern

While most found the story moving, one reviewer expressed strong feelings about the relationship, calling it toxic. They highlighted instances of unhealthy behavior between the characters, suggesting a lack of emotional well-being. This perspective is valid, and it's important to acknowledge that not everyone will connect with the story or its portrayal of love.

Final Verdict

Six Records of a Floating Life is not a light read. It's a story that will stay with you long after you finish it, prompting reflection on love, loss, and the human condition. While the subject matter is heavy, the writing is beautiful and the characters are unforgettable. I highly recommend it, but be prepared to have your heart broken. I'm giving it a solid 4.7/5. Just make sure you have tissues handy.
