This novel had me hooked from the start with its intriguing premise: a blend of xianxia, romance, and comedy. It's not a deep, philosophical exploration of the dao, but a fun, engaging read perfect for when you want something not too serious.
First Impressions
The initial chapters were strong, drawing me in with the dynamic between the MC and ML. The "enemies to lovers" trope is well-executed, and the setting of ancient China with cultivation elements is always a win in my book. I immediately liked the MC's character, even if he's not the sharpest tool in the shed.
What Works Well
One of the strongest aspects is the doting nature of the ML and the sect towards the MC. It creates a warm, fuzzy feeling that makes you want to root for them. The side characters are also entertaining, adding depth and humor to the story. I particularly enjoyed the mystery surrounding the MC's family lineage and the contract binding him and the ML. It kept me guessing and eager to find out more. The plot is unique and sets itself apart from other novels in the genre.
Areas of Concern
However, some aspects did give me pause. The MC can come across as overly reliant on the ML, and his naivete sometimes borders on frustrating. I also found the constant public attention on their relationship a bit jarring and unrealistic. It felt like everyone was overly invested in their romance, which detracted from the story at times. Finally, I felt like the pacing became rushed towards the end, which somewhat cheapened the romance.
