My Thoughts on Payback
"Payback" is a wild ride of revenge, dark humor, and a romance that's anything but conventional. I dove into this novel expecting a standard revenge story, and while it delivers on that front, it's the complex characters and their twisted dynamics that really grabbed my attention.
First Impressions
Right off the bat, I was intrigued by Lee Yoohan, the MC. He's not your typical bright-eyed protagonist. He's burdened by guilt and uses acting as both a shield and a means of self-punishment. Then there's Yoon Jay, the ML, who's... well, let's just say he's intense. Their initial interactions are a mix of obsession and attraction, setting the stage for a relationship that's far from healthy but undeniably captivating.
What Works Well
The character development is a definite highlight. Watching Yoohan slowly confront his past and begin to live for himself is incredibly satisfying. Yoon Jay, despite his questionable methods, genuinely cares for Yoohan and pushes him to confront his demons. The dry humor sprinkled throughout provides a welcome contrast to the heavier themes, and the plot twists kept me guessing until the very end. The world-building is also well-done, especially how it dives deep into the mental states of the characters. I also have to say, the story has some very hot steamy scenes.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the complexity of the relationship, it's not for everyone. Yoon Jay's possessiveness can be unsettling, and some of his actions cross the line. I also felt that the pacing could be uneven at times, with some sections feeling rushed while others dragged on. The second side story wasn't as strong as the main plot, with an odd character shift in the ML's uncle.

Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, "Payback" is a compelling and thought-provoking novel. If you're looking for a dark romance with complex characters, a gripping revenge plot, and aren't afraid of potentially triggering content, I'd recommend giving it a try. Just be prepared for a bumpy ride.
