"Kill the Lights" is a wild ride. It throws you headfirst into a world of action, celebrity drama, and a heavy dose of the supernatural. I found myself hooked from the start, eager to see how this strange mix of genres would play out. While the novel definitely has its strengths, it also stumbles in some key areas, particularly when it comes to the central relationship.

First Impressions

The premise is undeniably intriguing: a hardened mercenary, Mason, dies and is reborn into the body of Haley Lusk, a washed-up, drug-addicted actor. The initial chapters are a whirlwind as Mason tries to navigate this new, unfamiliar life in the spotlight. I appreciated the humor and the fish-out-of-water element as Mason's "normal guy" persona clashes with the expectations surrounding Haley. It's a clever setup that promises a lot of exciting developments.

What Works Well

The action scenes are a definite highlight. When Mason gets to flex his mercenary skills, the story really shines. I also enjoyed the exploration of identity and how Mason grapples with being trapped in a body so different from his own. The author does a decent job of portraying Mason's internal struggles as he tries to reconcile his past life with his present circumstances.

Areas of Concern

My biggest issue, and one echoed by many, is the romance. The relationship between Mason and Noah felt forced and, at times, deeply uncomfortable. Noah's obsession with Mason borders on the psychotic, and some of the scenes are difficult to read. I found the power dynamics skewed, and the non-consensual moments left a bad taste in my mouth. It overshadowed a lot of the plot and made it hard to enjoy the rest of the novel.

Final Verdict

"Kill the Lights" is a mixed bag. It has a compelling premise, exciting action, and a protagonist you can root for. However, the problematic romance and uneven character development hold it back from reaching its full potential. If you're willing to overlook the troubling aspects of the relationship, there's enjoyment to be had. Otherwise, proceed with caution.
