In 20XX, mysterious dungeons appeared around the world. Countries immediately mobilized their armies to investigate the interiors. However, only female soldiers were able to actually step inside. For some unknown reason, men were unable to enter the dungeons, as they were flung back at the entrance. Twenty years later, dungeon explorers became the most desired profession for women. After all, discovering new materials in the dungeons and selling them could lead to untold riches, and the power gained from slaying monsters roaming the dungeons was immense. The world was inevitably shifting toward a female-dominated society. Amidst this, Tadahitori, a 16-year-old boy, visited the newly opened Okutama Dungeon entrance as part of a school event. He was pushed into the dungeon entrance by his bully, Kuroiwa, and—unexpectedly—managed to step inside without being flung back. Thus began a tumultuous series of events. The Okutama Dungeon, which had previously rejected any intruders except women, transformed into an abnormal dungeon where even female explorers could not enter. And when Hitori tried to exit the dungeon, he was flung back to the inside at the entrance, unable to leave. Left with no choice, Hitori had to spend his time at the relatively safe entrance of the dungeon, surviving with the aid of supplies from the Self-Defense Forces sent by the government. One day, a soldier who had been providing supplies said to him, “Hey, Hitori, don’t you ever think about seeing what’s inside the dungeon?” Hitori, upon hearing those words, gradually became interested in exploring the dungeon’s interior and began investigating it alone.

Okay, that title is a mouthful, but it definitely grabbed my attention! The premise is undeniably intriguing: a world where only women can enter dungeons, and our male protagonist somehow manages to break the mold. I went in expecting a fun, action-packed adventure with a unique spin on the dungeon-crawling genre, and honestly, I wasn’t disappointed.
What Works Well
The world-building is surprisingly solid, which is a huge plus for me. I appreciate when authors take the time to flesh out their worlds, and this one seems to have a good foundation. The dialogue, while maybe a bit unnatural at times, generally flows well and does a good job of conveying information without feeling like a forced exposition dump. I especially liked how the author integrates explanations into the narrative, making it feel organic and relevant to the story. The "weak to strong" trope is always a classic, and I'm eager to see how our protagonist develops as he navigates this unusual situation.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the initial chapters, I do have some reservations. The first chapter sets up a potentially interesting dynamic with the protagonist's classmates, including a bully and some popular girls, but they seem to disappear entirely after that. This feels like a missed opportunity, as it could have added another layer of complexity to the story. It almost feels like a red herring, leading the reader to expect a plotline that never materializes. I think that the story could benefit from either revisiting those characters or streamlining the first chapter to focus more on the dungeon aspect.

Despite a few shortcomings, One Man Hero has a lot of potential. The unique premise, coupled with the solid world-building and engaging dialogue, makes it a worthwhile read. If you're looking for a fresh take on the dungeon-crawling genre with a male protagonist breaking the mold, this might be right up your alley. Just be prepared for some potentially abandoned plot threads along the way.
