First Impressions
"Old Wang Doesn’t Want to be Tragic" initially piqued my interest with its blend of comedy, romance, and a mature protagonist navigating a second chance at life. The tags, especially "calm protagonist" and "devoted love interests," promised a refreshing dynamic. I dove in hoping for a feel-good story with a touch of revenge, and for the most part, that's what I got.
What Works Well
The family dynamics are a definite highlight. It's refreshing to see a Chinese novel where step-relatives and adopted siblings genuinely care for each other. The portrayal of familial love, with its subtle gestures and unwavering support, really resonated with me. I particularly enjoyed the evolution of the MC's relationship with his siblings and the realistic portrayal of the Wang dad and step-mother.
The main couple's dynamic is also quite compelling, even if a bit unbalanced. The ML's intense devotion and almost yandere-ish tendencies are certainly a unique flavor, and the MC's calm, collected demeanor provides a nice contrast. I found the ML's "wolfdog" personality endearing and the MC's elegant manipulations entertaining. The revenge aspect, especially the subtle payback against the reborn original protagonist, was also satisfyingly executed.

While I enjoyed the story, I do have some reservations. The biggest issue for me is the lack of insight into the MC's feelings, especially in the first half. The original protagonist's redemption arc felt somewhat incomplete, leaving me with mixed feelings about his character.
