"Not A Regressor" is a web novel that grabbed my attention with its clever premise. It's a story that plays with the popular regression trope, but with a twist that initially feels refreshing. I went in expecting a typical power fantasy, but I found something a little more nuanced, at least for a while.

First Impressions

The opening chapters are undeniably strong. The author hooks you with a unique take on the regressor theme, promising a protagonist who isn't what he seems. Yet, he's also strangely compelling. His schemes and lies are often entertaining, and his interactions with other characters, particularly in the early chapters, are well-written. The world-building, while not overly detailed, is sufficient to support the story. The constellations and the supernatural elements add a layer of intrigue. I found the initial plotline related to the fake regression quite interesting, and the comedic undertones were genuinely funny.

Areas of Concern

Unfortunately, the novel seems to stumble as it progresses. The initial cleverness fades, and the story devolves into more generic tropes. The power scaling becomes inconsistent, and the protagonist's reliance on plot armor grows tiresome. Some readers might find the protagonist's romantic relationships problematic. His interactions with the female characters, can come across as sleazy and manipulative. The "will they/won't they" dynamic, especially with Ha-eun, feels juvenile for characters supposedly in their late twenties and early thirties. The author introduces new abilities conveniently to get out of situations and also writes in an abundance of racism.

"Not A Regressor" had the potential to be something truly special. While the beginning is promising and the protagonist is initially engaging, the story ultimately falls prey to common web novel pitfalls. The plot becomes formulaic, the power scaling is inconsistent, and the characters lose some of their initial charm. Despite its flaws, the novel can be entertaining for a while, especially if you enjoy a protagonist who isn't afraid to bend the rules. Overall, I'd say it's a decent read, but don't expect a masterpiece.
