My Thoughts on Ninth in The World
"Ninth in The World" is a novel that certainly evokes strong reactions, and diving into it was quite the experience. With a blend of action, fantasy, martial arts, and even a touch of tragedy, it seemed like a potentially captivating read. However, the journey wasn't without its bumps.
First Impressions
Initially, I found myself a bit disoriented. The story throws you into a cultivation world, a mcguffin, a ship to Earth, and a body swap all within the first few chapters. It felt rushed, as if the author was eager to get the protagonist to Earth and start the main plot. This rapid-fire introduction made it difficult to connect with the characters or fully grasp the stakes early on. I was left feeling like I was missing crucial context.
What Works Well
Despite the initial confusion, there are aspects I can appreciate. The novel seems to lean heavily into cultivation, which is a big draw for fans of the xianxia genre. There's a focus on alchemy later in the story, a welcome addition given the author's apparent specialty. The concept of the protagonist's hidden cultivation level adds an intriguing layer of mystery. I can see the appeal for readers who enjoy a main character whose true strength is underestimated. There are some veterans that seem to appreciate the author's style and how they avert expectations.
Areas of Concern
One of the most significant issues I encountered was the seemingly nationalistic undertones. The portrayal of certain cultures and the emphasis on Chinese superiority felt jarring and unnecessary. Additionally, the character development, or lack thereof, is a valid concern. While I don't always expect deep character arcs in this genre, the rapid introduction and swift disposal of characters made it difficult to invest in their fates. The story may fall into tropes that are not enjoyable for some.

Final Verdict
"Ninth in The World" is a mixed bag. While it offers some intriguing cultivation elements and a unique protagonist, it's hampered by a rushed beginning, questionable cultural portrayals, and shallow character development. If you're a die-hard xianxia fan willing to overlook these flaws, you might find some enjoyment here. However, for those seeking a more nuanced and balanced story, this might not be the best choice. I'd recommend proceeding with caution.
