"National Beauty" promised a historical romance with a reborn female lead, and after diving in, I have mixed feelings. It's a story with a lot of heart, but it might not be for everyone.

First Impressions

Initially, I was drawn to the premise of a second chance at life, especially within an ancient Chinese setting. The tags like "beautiful female lead," "devoted love interests," and "couple growth" definitely piqued my interest. However, I quickly realized that this isn't your typical power-fantasy rebirth story.

What Works Well

The characters are undeniably a strong point. I found myself invested in the side characters, especially the relationships within the imperial family. The author does a good job of creating three-dimensional figures, even the minor ones, and their fates are often tied up neatly, which is satisfying. I particularly appreciated how the male lead's stutter wasn't magically cured by the female lead's presence; it was a gradual process, mirroring the realistic development of their relationship. The story explores the theme of a woman reclaiming her desires for a good life and a loving marriage, which is compelling.

Areas of Concern

My biggest reservation revolves around the female lead, Song Jianning. While some readers find her simplicity endearing, I can see why others find her frustratingly passive. Her past trauma understandably shapes her actions, but at times, it feels like she relies too heavily on others to solve her problems. She doesn't always come across as clever, despite the "clever protagonist" tag. I found some of her decisions questionable and noticed how her naivety could be a bit grating. Additionally, some might find the stepbrother's obsession with her uncomfortable.

Final Verdict

"National Beauty" is a completed novel, but the translation is ongoing. I'd give it a solid 3.8 out of 5 stars. If you're looking for a lighthearted, easy read with well-developed characters and a focus on relationship dynamics, you might enjoy this. However, if you prefer strong, independent female leads who take charge of their destiny, this might not be the right fit for you. Be prepared for a slower pace and a protagonist who is more reactive than proactive, at least initially.
