"Major General, a Male Zerg Has Been Found on the Battlefield!!" is definitely a unique entry in the mecha/sci-fi/yaoi genre. The concept alone grabbed my attention, and while it had some pacing issues, it ultimately provided a satisfying read.
First Impressions
The premise is undeniably intriguing. Instead of the typical human-transmigrates-into-a-Zerg story, we have an MC who is a Zerg from birth, just lost on Earth. This twist immediately sets it apart. I was hooked from the start, eager to see how this played out in a futuristic, interstellar setting.
What Works Well
The relationship between the MC and the Major General is a major highlight. The romance develops nicely, with a good flow that allows the characters to get to know each other deeply. I appreciated the MC's role as a support system for the ML, especially as they navigate the Major General's past and the societal prejudices surrounding male Zergs. The familial love themes are also well-executed, and it's satisfying to see the MC stand by the ML, especially in the face of abuse of power from some characters. The author did a great job of creating a strong, supportive dynamic between the two leads.
Areas of Concern
While the initial setup was strong, the story does suffer from some pacing issues. The beginning spends a lot of time describing the Zerg social structure, which, while necessary for world-building, can feel a bit info-dumpy and slow. I also felt that the story became a bit repetitive, with a heavy focus on the interactions between the MC and ML to the exclusion of exploring the wider Zerg society or giving the MC more agency in dealing with societal issues. Later on, the introduction of a mysterious villain felt somewhat forced and, at times, undermined the competence of the Zerg military. I was a bit taken aback by how easily these supposedly elite soldiers were outsmarted.
