"Kiss Goodnight, Mr. Ji" is a completed josei romance that I recently dove into, and it's definitely been a ride. With a handsome male lead, a female protagonist navigating the showbiz world, and a healthy dose of wealth, it has all the trappings of a guilty pleasure read. However, my experience was a mixed bag, and I'm here to break down why.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the premise: a relationship built on a one-night stand, a female lead aspiring to be an actress, and a mysterious birthmark that fades with...well, you get the idea. The early chapters felt like a fairly straightforward romance, and I was curious to see how the characters would develop. But as I continued, some cracks began to show.
What Works Well
Despite some of the criticisms, I can see why some readers enjoyed this novel. The initial plot is engaging, and it's easy to get invested in the central relationship, at least at first. I found some of the initial interactions between the leads entertaining, and the showbiz setting provided a decent backdrop for the drama to unfold. The author also tackles the FL's split personality in a compassionate way, and the ML's choice to protect her despite the risks is admirable.
Areas of Concern
Communication seems to be a major issue for both the characters and, perhaps, the readers. I found myself frequently frustrated by the lack of open and honest dialogue between the leads. This led to misunderstandings and unnecessary drama that could have been easily resolved. Several readers found the female lead to be indecisive, weak, and even annoying, particularly when she vacillates between using the male lead and pushing him away. I also encountered some discomfort with the male lead's behavior, which at times veered into borderline abusive territory. His manipulative tendencies and the power imbalance in their relationship raised some red flags for me.

"Kiss Goodnight, Mr. Ji" is a flawed but ultimately readable novel. If you're looking for a light, drama-filled romance with a flawed but intriguing couple, this might scratch that itch. However, be prepared for some frustrating character decisions, communication breakdowns, and potentially triggering content. For me, it lands at a 2.5/5. It had moments of promise, but the execution ultimately fell short of my expectations.
