My Thoughts on Kill the Hero
"Kill the Hero" is a web novel that I dove into with a mix of excitement and trepidation, given the divided opinions I'd seen floating around. What I found was a story that, while not perfect, definitely had its own unique charm and kept me entertained. It's a revenge story at its core, with a protagonist who's far from the traditional hero, and that's where I think a lot of its appeal lies.
First Impressions
The initial hook is strong. We have a protagonist betrayed by the hero he served, and he's given a second chance to rewrite history and exact his revenge. The concept is similar to other popular novels in the genre, like EER or SSN, but the twist of the MC being a loyal subordinate turned vengeful anti-hero intrigued me. I was ready for a dark and cunning tale.
What Works Well
The MC, Kim Woojin, is definitely a highlight. He's ruthless, cold, and incredibly pragmatic. He's not afraid to use any means necessary to achieve his goals, and I found his manipulative nature quite compelling. Many readers praised the way he schemes and plots, rather than simply brute-forcing his way through every obstacle. This strategic approach made the power fantasy aspect more engaging for me.
I also appreciated the lack of a traditional harem. The focus remains firmly on the plot and Woojin's revenge, without being distracted by romantic subplots. The side characters, especially Lee Jin Ah, provide some much-needed comedic relief and are generally likeable, even if they aren't the most deeply developed characters I've encountered.
Areas of Concern
One common criticism is the MC's "plot armor" and the ease with which he acquires skills and items. While I agree that he does get lucky, I didn't find it as detrimental as some others did. I think it's part of the power fantasy element, and if you go in expecting that, it's easier to overlook. However, I can see how it might make the story feel less tense for some readers.
Some readers also felt the world-building was lacking, and the plot became boring after a certain point. I think the pacing could be improved, and some aspects of the world could be fleshed out more. The ending, while providing closure, also leaves some questions unanswered, which might frustrate some.

Final Verdict
Overall, I enjoyed "Kill the Hero" for what it is: a fun, fast-paced revenge story with a cunning protagonist. It's not a groundbreaking masterpiece, but it's a solid read if you're looking for some satisfying payback and strategic maneuvering. I would recommend it with the caveat that you should be prepared for some plot armor and a relatively straightforward power fantasy.
