Description
Insane. Traitor. Terrorist. The title given to Joon-young, a soldier who fought a lost war. Performing the most devious last stand befitting his titles, his memories were sent to another world. Now named Isaac, he seeks to live out his days in relative peace. But with his family wanting him dead he is sent to the Campus, the Empire’s greatest centre of Education, in hopes that he would be expelled and tarnish his position as the heir of his family. He is told that the school will treat him as if he doesn’t exist, that he isn’t protected by its rules. But Isaac, or Joon-young, sees it differently. There are no rules to hold him back from getting what he wants.

Isaac Review & Spoilers - Novel Translator
My Thoughts on Isaac
"Isaac" is a web novel that's certainly sparked some strong opinions, and after diving in, I can see why. It's a bit of a mixed bag, but with enough intriguing elements to keep me reading.
First Impressions
The initial chapters definitely threw me for a loop. The prologue, depicting a war-torn Korea, felt a little jarring and out of place with the fantasy setting to come. I wasn't quite sure what to make of it, and it did take a bit of effort to push through. However, I'm glad I did, because the story definitely picks up once Isaac enters the academy.
What Works Well
The protagonist, Isaac, is the real draw here. He's not your typical overpowered hero, but rather a resourceful and cunning individual who relies on his wits to navigate a world of magic and aristocracy. I found his pragmatic approach refreshing, and his willingness to bend the rules (or outright break them) made for some genuinely entertaining moments.
Many readers praised Isaac's unique personality, calling him everything from "despicable" to "pitiful," but always interesting. I appreciate that he's not afraid to get his hands dirty, but also retains a certain moral compass, particularly when it comes to protecting children. It’s this blend of ruthlessness and compassion that makes him such a compelling character. The political intrigue within the academy setting is also well-executed, creating a world where alliances shift and betrayals lurk around every corner.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the story, I can see why some readers have issues with it. The plot can feel a bit meandering at times, lacking a clear overarching conflict to drive the narrative forward. Some of the character interactions can also feel a bit contrived, particularly the instant connections Isaac forms with certain female characters. There's also the issue of world-building. It's not bad, but it does feel a bit underdeveloped in certain areas.

Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, I found "Isaac" to be an engaging and thought-provoking read. The protagonist is a standout character, and the political intrigue kept me hooked. While the plot could be tighter and the world-building more fleshed out, the novel's strengths outweigh its weaknesses. I'd recommend giving it a try, but be prepared for a story that's more about character-driven scheming than epic battles and magical displays.
