"Interstellar Rare Species" is a web novel that certainly sparked a lot of discussion, and after diving in, I can see why. It's a blend of sci-fi, fantasy, and romance with a heavy dose of slice-of-life, centered around a mute MC who transmigrates into a world with unique gender dynamics. While it has its charms, some aspects left me feeling conflicted.

Initially, I was drawn in by the premise. A world where "females" are rare and the MC, due to his muteness, is initially mistaken for an artificial one? Intriguing! The early chapters had a certain freshness, and I was eager to see how the story would unfold. I also appreciated the translator's work; the writing flowed well, making it an easy read.

What Works Well

The MC, Gu Yu, is undeniably endearing. His kindness and desire to contribute to society, despite his past trauma and low self-esteem, made me root for him. His journey to overcome his muteness and pursue his dream of becoming a singer is genuinely heartwarming. I also found the ML, Cyno, to be a patient and supportive partner, which created a nice dynamic. Many readers seemed to enjoy the fluffy, feel-good nature of the romance, describing it as a "beautiful gem" and "pure fluff." The world-building, while controversial, is certainly unique and sparked a lot of discussion.

Areas of Concern

However, it's impossible to ignore the significant criticisms leveled against the novel. The portrayal of gender roles and the treatment of "artificial females" and "transgender females" (males forcefully transitioned) raised serious red flags for me. Some of the dialogue and character interactions felt, at best, tone-deaf and, at worst, actively harmful. The "male" and "female" dynamics seemed to fall into stereotypical portrayals, making the story feel more like a heterosexual romance with swapped pronouns than a genuine exploration of BL themes. The focus on reproduction and the societal pressure to have children also felt heavy-handed.
