Description
During the evening rounds, I asked Dr. Chen, “Have you seen Tumor-kun?” He replied that he had. I then asked, “Do you think we resemble the female lead and the doctor in there?” Dr. Chen asked me, “Are you trying to flirt with me?” I replied, “Yes, haha.” Dr. Chen said, “Only those who obediently undergo chemotherapy can flirt with me.” I instantly deflated. A very short short story.

My Thoughts on I’m Going To Die
"I'm Going To Die" is a short, bittersweet journey that definitely left an impression on me. While the title is a bit of a giveaway, I wasn't quite prepared for the emotional rollercoaster this story offered. It's the kind of read that sticks with you, prompting reflection long after you've turned the final page.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the comedic undertones, which felt like a surprising contrast to the heavy subject matter. The protagonist's lighthearted personality and humor made him instantly likeable. It was clear from the start that this was going to be a touching, if not heartbreaking, experience. The slice-of-life elements also added a layer of relatability, making the protagonist's struggles feel even more poignant.
What Works Well
The strength of this novel lies in its characters. The protagonist is incredibly endearing, and his interactions, especially with the doctor, are heartwarming. I particularly enjoyed the balance between humor and angst; it prevented the story from becoming overwhelmingly depressing. The familial love depicted is also a highlight, adding depth and emotional resonance to the narrative. Despite its brevity, the story manages to create a strong emotional connection with the reader. The translation is also very well done, and I found it easy to become fully immersed in the experience.
Areas of Concern
The main criticism I have is the abrupt ending. While the story is complete, I couldn't help but feel that it could have benefited from an additional chapter or two to provide a more satisfying resolution. Some plot threads felt a little loose, and I was left wanting more closure, especially regarding the doctor's perspective after the protagonist's death. The pacing, while generally good, felt slightly rushed towards the end, which contributed to the somewhat unfinished feeling.

Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, "I'm Going To Die" is a worthwhile read. It's a short, emotionally resonant story with lovable characters and a good balance of humor and sadness. While the ending could be more fleshed out, the overall experience is touching and memorable. I'd recommend it if you're looking for a quick, emotional read that will leave you contemplating the preciousness of life. I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
