My Thoughts on I’m a Passing Superhero
Okay, so I dove into "I'm a Passing Superhero" with a bit of excitement, drawn in by the premise of a hero hiding his true abilities in a modern fantasy world. The academy setting and slice-of-life elements also sounded promising. However, my experience was a bit of a mixed bag, to say the least.
First Impressions
The initial chapters set the stage well enough. We're introduced to a male protagonist navigating the complexities of a hero academy while seemingly downplaying his powers. The idea of a "passing" superhero, someone who isn't actively seeking the spotlight, had definite appeal. The comedic elements were present from the start, which I initially found amusing.
What Works Well
Honestly, finding aspects that genuinely "worked well" was a challenge. The concept itself – a powerful individual trying to live a normal life in a world obsessed with heroes – has potential. There were moments when I could see glimpses of what the author was aiming for, particularly in the slice-of-life scenes where the protagonist interacted with his classmates. The world-building, while not incredibly detailed, provided a decent backdrop for the story to unfold.
Areas of Concern
My biggest issue, and one that significantly impacted my enjoyment, was the protagonist's character. While intended to be a "money grubber" and perhaps a bit cynical, his behavior often came across as unnecessarily rude and disrespectful. The supposed comedic elements sometimes felt forced and relied on him being overly arrogant and looking down on others. While I understand the intention might have been to subvert the typical hero archetype, it often felt like he was just being a jerk for the sake of it. The supposed contrast between his words about heroism and his actual actions felt more jarring than insightful. It made it difficult to root for him or even empathize with his struggles.
Final Verdict
"I'm a Passing Superhero" had the potential to be an entertaining and thought-provoking read. The premise is intriguing, and the setting offers opportunities for engaging storytelling. However, the execution, particularly regarding the protagonist's character, ultimately fell short for me. The constant negativity and unlikeable actions made it a struggle to stay invested in the story. For me, it's a 2 out of 5 stars. Perhaps with some character development and a more nuanced approach to the humor, this story could find its footing.
