My Thoughts on I Was A Porter
"I Was A Porter" presents an interesting premise: a man returns to society after being trapped in a monster-infested world for twenty years. The initial hook of a hunter lost in time intrigued me, and I dove in hoping for a unique take on the familiar "gate" genre. However, my experience was somewhat mixed.
First Impressions
The first few chapters focus heavily on the protagonist, Lee Seung-Ho, adjusting to modern life. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, and I appreciate the attempt to ground the story in reality. The author spends a considerable amount of time detailing his awe at modern technology and food. While some might find this charming, I can see how it could become tedious for others eager to jump into action.
What Works Well
The potential for character development is definitely present. I liked the idea of exploring the psychological impact of being isolated for so long and then suddenly thrust back into a vastly changed world. There are hints of a larger plot at play, suggesting that Lee Seung-Ho's disappearance wasn't accidental and that a greater threat looms on the horizon. Also, I found the glimpses of his hidden strength, revealed when his family is threatened, to be compelling and a great setup for the action to come.
Areas of Concern
My main concern revolves around the protagonist's characterization. While I understand the desire to portray him as someone struggling to adapt, his naivete sometimes felt excessive. Some readers might find his overly accommodating nature and lack of common sense frustrating, especially given his age and experience. Also, the pacing of the story could be a problem for some. The initial chapters dedicate a lot of time to his reintegration, which might not appeal to readers seeking immediate action and adventure.

Final Verdict
"I Was A Porter" has the foundation for a compelling story. The world-building is intriguing, and the hints of a larger plot are promising. However, the pacing and the protagonist's characterization might not appeal to all readers. If you're willing to be patient and enjoy a story that focuses on character development and societal reintegration, this novel might be worth a try. Otherwise, you might want to wait until the plot picks up before diving in. I'm giving it a tentative 3/5.
