My Thoughts on I Picked Up an Amnesiac Witch

I went into "I Picked Up an Amnesiac Witch" with a healthy dose of curiosity. The premise, a regressed protagonist stuck with a group of women who are now vying for his affection after a disastrous previous timeline, definitely had potential. While there are aspects I enjoyed, it ultimately left me feeling a bit underwhelmed.

First Impressions

Initially, the story hooked me with its intriguing setup. The world is in a state of crisis thanks to the titular Witch of Winter, and the protagonist finds himself in a unique, if unenviable, position. However, I quickly found myself struggling to connect with the main character.

What Works Well

The translation seems to be a strong point, and I can appreciate that. From what I've read, the writing is decent and easy to follow. The core mystery surrounding the Witch's appearance, the regression, and the extent of her powers is compelling and kept me somewhat invested. My biggest issue lies with the protagonist himself. His actions and motivations often feel inconsistent. While the translator argues that his behavior stems from a realistic fear of powerful women, I find it difficult to reconcile this with his supposed past as a capable Duke. He often comes across as weak and indecisive, and his perceived cruelty towards some of the female characters, while being lenient with others who arguably caused him more harm, is baffling. I also noticed that the backstory established in the beginning seems to lose its relevance as the story progresses, making me question its purpose.
