My Thoughts on I Login Alone
"I Login Alone" is a novel that immediately throws you into a world of dungeons, monsters, and a protagonist who's overpowered right from the get-go. As a fan of the genre, I was eager to see how this story would unfold, especially given the buzz surrounding the manhwa adaptation. However, my experience was a bit of a mixed bag, and here's why.
First Impressions
Initially, I was hooked by the premise. The idea of a seemingly ordinary world suddenly invaded by dungeons and a protagonist with hidden strength is always appealing. The story starts with a bang, and it's easy to get caught up in the initial action. The comedy is also present from the start, and I found myself chuckling at some of the early antics.
What Works Well
The initial world-building is intriguing, and the concept of a protagonist who's exceptionally strong from the beginning definitely has its appeal. I can see why some readers would enjoy the power fantasy aspect. The translation quality, especially from the later team, is also commendable. ActiveTranslations seems to have put in the work to ensure the early chapters are polished. The quick pace of the story and the protagonist's early rampages are certainly a draw for those who enjoy non-stop action.
Areas of Concern
However, as I delved deeper, some issues started to surface. The dialogue occasionally felt clunky, relying on tired exposition about dungeons and game mechanics. While some appreciate Toika's style, I found the constant praise of the protagonist's actions a bit grating. It felt like the story was constantly trying to convince me of how awesome the MC was, rather than letting his actions speak for themselves.
The title itself seems a bit misleading, as the story isn't actually set within a VR or game world. The "login" aspect doesn't really fit the IRL setting, which I found a little odd. I noticed a few readers mentioning concerns about the story devolving into a generic dungeon crawler, and I can see where they're coming from.
Final Verdict
"I Login Alone" has moments of brilliance, particularly in its initial world-building and fast-paced action. However, the clunky dialogue, the over-the-top praise of the protagonist, and the somewhat misleading title hold it back. While it may appeal to those who enjoy a straightforward power fantasy with a strong male lead, others might find it lacking in depth and originality. Ultimately, it's a story that may divide readers, depending on their tolerance for some of the more common tropes in the genre.
