Description

The premise itself is intriguing – a transmigrated protagonist navigating ancient China as a cannon fodder character. The early chapters drew me in with the initial survival struggles of the MC as a prisoner, and I was eager to see how Jiang Huai would turn his situation around.
What Works Well
The story excels in its infrastructure and army-building aspects. Jiang Huai's ventures in the ancient world are definitely the highlight, and I found myself enjoying the strategic elements as he worked to improve his circumstances and those around him. The romance, while slow-burn, felt organic. I especially appreciated that the characters didn't fall in love at first sight. The ML fell in love pretty early on, but the MC took a while to reciprocate, which felt more realistic given their initial circumstances. The plot is relatively concise, with only 70+ chapters, making it easy to digest and finish. It's a feel-good novel at its core, and it doesn't stray from that promise.
Areas of Concern
My biggest issue lies with the translation. While some might find the GenZ slang amusing, it felt incredibly out of place in a historical setting. It's jarring to read slang-filled dialogue in a story set in ancient China, and it detracted from the overall immersion for me. Also, the balance between infrastructure building and romance felt off. The story is heavily skewed towards the former, and those looking for a romance-heavy novel might be disappointed. I also felt that the infrastructure building, while present, wasn't as exciting as it could have been. Things seemed to fall into place a little too easily for the MC after the initial prison arc.
